about the show

RDC announced Collective Realities as a new and unique performance project for our 2024/25 Discover Season - a way to both highlight the choreographic voices of the company and to support the incredibly talented dancers of St. Louis. And in many ways, this collaborative concert is unlike any other project RDC has undertaken. By creating paid opportunities for dancers beyond the company, RDC broadened our impact and spread our artist-forward mission. Spanning six months from audition to performance and featuring the talents of 23 local artists, this show exemplifies creative discovery and community innovation.

However, those who are familiar with RDC's early work may remember a video collection by the same name, released in February 2021. During the peak of COVID and on the heels of our walk-through performance, Stanzas & Sculptures, the founding company gathered in the chilly upstairs ballroom of the Link Auditorium to discuss what came next. As a group, we landed on the idea of a collaborative film project. Each dancer would choreograph and direct their own film, and we would support one another as performers. As we got to making, the title Collective Realities emerged to reflect mutual journies through the present unknown. Grappling with exhaustion and frustration mid-pandemic, our dances were an outlet for our shared experiences: individual in perspective yet energetically unififed. So is this a new show? Yes and no - while this show underscores RDC's growth in the past four years, it also reflects our roots and collaborative spirit. Like before, each process centers artists: their voices, their experiences, their desires. Each piece explores a relevant and present question or need. And finally, each performance brings audience and dancers together to experience our collective realities.

Music: Nicholas Britell
Lighting: Alice Anders

Program Note: This piece is an exploration of spiritual awakening, human connection, and learning to trust. How do we cope when we get stuck in the same cycles? What do we do when we are forced to evolve, to be reborn? How do we lean on community to brave our transformations together?

III. let's go look at the moon,

V. I don’t mean a lover
Choreography: Emily Small in collaboration with dancers
Performance: Hayley Barker, Callie Bratsch, Elyzah Gasmen, Nathan Krueger, Carly Vanderheyden, Ashlynn Woelbling
Music: Silver Mt. Zion
Lighting: Caroline McNinch

Program Note: "I don't mean a lover" is an abstract portrayal of a deeply personal narrative. My research was guided by "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine" by Gail Honeyman and "The trouble with 'donating our dopamine' to our phones, not our friends," the Fresh Air interview with Derek Thompson, however I approached the work mostly from my own experience with isolation. This work is the story of my search for humanness, driven by my innate need to connect with others. In a time where our lives are more privatized than ever, I feel the effects of friends being less inclined to lean on each other. It seems to me that our most vulnerable selves are increasingly being reserved for partners, moms, and sisters. I feel more lonely standing in a crowd than I used to. I find myself stuck in a state of catching up with loved ones, longing to be in a state of simply hanging out. Sometimes I'm surprised by a meaningful connection; but that is followed by continual disappointments. This work is my attempt to reconcile conflicting realities with my individual truths.

VI. the price we pay for
[interlude]
comes a hesitancy with change

Choreography: Abbi LeBaube
Performance: Callie Bratsch, Elyzah Gasmen, Lexie Hoehn, Rachel Wu
